Flannel Twin

Flannel Twin
Why do so many lesbians dress like lesbians?

I don't really understand why they would WANT to perpetuate a stereotype. I was watching Leno and he had Tegan and Sara as the musical guest (identical twins who are both lesbians), I had never heard of them before but it took me about 2 seconds to figure out they were gay. One of them was wearing a flannel shirt with the sleeves rolled up and a MULLET, and the other one wasn't much better. What's the point in stereotyping yourself? If your sexuality is really the most interesting thing about you that's really sad.
I KNOW not all lesbians dress the stereotype. I'm just wondering why some do.
Thank you Abby, for your sincere and honest answer.

I have been guilty of dressing more gay when I go out to dinner with my parents and their friends just so I don't have to field awkward questions about my 'boy'friend. I won't lie about my girlfriend because she is terrific, but it's easier for everyone involved if I just give off more of a gay vibe and thus do not have to answer in the first place :P

I think that's part of why people dress gay, just so that people can pick you as it so that you don't have to answer awkward questions or be put in awkward situations where guys hit on you. But to be honest I've dressed like a lesbian since I could choose my own clothes, so when I was...five? I never consciously made a decision to dress the way I do, it's just that I've always preferred wearing guys' clothes. Just like I never made a conscious decision to be a lesbian, it's just something that I've just sort of always been. I would have to make more of an effort to make myself less of a stereotype and I'm not going to do that, because that's being just as untrue to myself as becoming a stereotype that I'm not.

As an aside, I would never get a mullet and in my opinion Tegan and Sara are practically the only girls in the world that can make a mullet look good. But that's just me :P
